english: The Photograph as Evidence: Between Identity and Subject?
rašo eglė rindzevičiūtė 2006 09 30 @ 09:51:57 (1917 perskaitė)
tema media studies
It is usual to consider photography as being a technical and author-less activity. Its apparently endless reproducibility violates the historical nature of a “work of art.” Its faithfulness to the human eye – the camera as the prosthesis of an organ – makes it an irreplaceable servant for producing reality. Why do photographs speak to us? Could photography stand for “Identity Discourse” that certifies and transmits the identity of the things/past represented?

tema neo-audio
„Balsas“ column for sound art (neo-audio) this time is devoted to the new releases coming from Lithuanian scene. In spring of 2006 two releases appeared – a collaborative DVD + CDRemix „Boarding Pass“ by Antanas Jasenka & Co and a double CD “Lengvai” and “60 x One Minute Colours of 2kHz Sound” by Gintas K. They seem to be the most noticeable releases in the Lithuanian scene of sound art. Here you can find short introduction / review on them.

english: The Mechanisms and Metaphors of a Democratic Machine: Cybernetics and Cultural Governance in Lithuania
rašo eglė rindzevičiūtė 2006 06 28 @ 06:06:32 (1722 perskaitė)
tema idėjos_ir_teorijos
The article focuses on a relatively unexplored area – the history of the relation between culture and technology in Lithuania. The author briefly discusses historical aspects of cybernetics – the science of control and communication – and its theoretical implications for a general theory of governance. Being an experimental sketch, the article does not aim to deliver an exhaustive analysis of the phenomenon. Rather, its purpose is finding an integrating perspective for understanding the development of science, politics and culture in the twentieth century Lithuania.

Shifting our spaces in the course of the day (office, café, public transportation, shop, home), the dynamics of our bodies shifts as well. We find ourselves in an open square and take a turn to a narrow street, enter the nightclub, prepared for intensive rhythms, or enter a slow space of theater, filled with thoughtful glances, emphatically graceful gestures and whisperings – the body reacts to the rhythm of environment even before we think. These spaces are weaved of various rituals, which we intuitively catch through reacting in a respective way: walking style, gesture, speech manner, voice timbre.

english: Geert Lovink: what and where is media culture

Interview with media teorist and activist Geert Lovink, Amsterdam

VM: We are starting a new journal on media culture. This sphere is considered to be almost empty field in Lithuania. I mean that we have TV, radio, internet but nobody is revising/questioning them. We do not want to be journal-for-media-beginners, but still we have to figure out some notions. What do you define as media culture?
